About the Teacher
NAME: Ruth Ann Wall
SCHOOL: Camp Dick Robinson Elementary
CLASS: 4th Grade Math
SCHOOL PHONE: 859 792-6136
I have been a teacher for 26 years, teaching every grade from kindergarten to eighth grade. My favorite subject to teach is math, but I love teaching all subjects. My husband, Sammy, and I have 2 kids, Eric (20) and Stephanie (18). Eric is in his junior year at the University of Louisville. He is majoring in economics and is involved in marching band, ballroom dancing, sign language, and recreational tennis. Stephanie is beginning college at the Eastern Kentucky University Danville campus. She is majoring in speech pathology. She loves to bake and is presently working at The Twisted Sifter Cake Bakery in Danville as a cake decorator. My interests are working with computers, fitness, and watching NCAA basketball. I also enjoy watching home-improvement shows, crime dramas, and science fiction during the off-season. I love good books and collect Newbery Medal winners.
My Mission
My personal mission for this class is to help the students be confident and capable in mathematics and to help them be prepared to successfully further their education throughout life. My dream is for every child to enjoy math, want to learn more, and use it to enhance their lives.
FAQ
This page will answer questions commonly asked by students and parents.
What can I do to help my child's math grade?
There are 4 areas in which your child is graded in math. Two (tests 40% and quizzes 20%) are dependent upon your child's study and mastery of 4th grade content. Two (home learning 20% and notebook 20%) can be directly controlled by your child's effort and responsibility. These two are the easiest ways to help your child.
1) Make sure he/she is keeping the notebook in good order by asking to see the math notebook (I will keep a running list of notebook requirements on the Notebook Requirements tab).
2) Check your child's agenda and the homework section of this web- page. Make sure he/she understands the material. ALWAYS check over your child's Friday homework (Reading Works) and make sure all work is shown on the paper, as this page counts as a 100 pt. assignment. Daily work counts as 10 points.
3) Check for Study Island assignments and see that your child is getting his/her blue ribbons by the due date. These assignments are a guaranteed 100% quiz grade for each assignment that has all required blue ribbons earned.
4) Keep and go over old tests as each new test will contain material from previous units of study.
5) Resist the temptation to do your child's homework for him/her or give the answers. The homework is what prepares them for the test and allows them to practice the skills to mastery.
What does my child need to focus on for success in math?
It is essential that students leave 4th grade with an automatic mastery of basic addition and multiplication facts. That will be a daily focus in my class and should be a part of any practice you do with your child at home. In addition to that, I will coordinate my curriculum with Kentucky's new standards and I will work closely with Mrs. Roy (5th grade math) to see that prerequisite skills necessary to 5th grade success are mastered.
In addition to practicing math facts, what can I do to help my child at home?
Check this web-site often and keep abreast of the skills we are studying in class. Encourage your child to use Study Island, and check the work your child does there. Measure things together during home remodeling or when cooking. Let your child see you using math in your daily life. Check your child's notebook as it will contain sample problems and directions to help you in explaining difficult concepts when you work with your child. Keep up with your child's progress on Infinite Campus. If you have not signed up yet, see Denise Miniard and she will supply you with a password.
